BIG file increase in Word 2003

Hiya, got somebody who has created a word document in word 2003. WHen its saved as a word 97 rtf(.doc) file, it jumps from 2mb to 64mb!! It also fails to load back in, even back to word 2003. Just sits there, does the virus scan, says converting then nothing. Tried on multiple pc's with no luck. Any ideas? Hugely appreciated,

If I had to guess (which I am) it sounds as though it has corrupted during conversion the RTF. Try using the Word2003 Open & Repair option. If that fails, then other than save the text, there's little left you can do with it.
