bgp propogation time

I have two internet connections; one is used exclusively for all traffic when it is available. The second is used only in the event the first goes down. The same public address space is advertised over both connections.

I would like to take down the primary and test connectivity with the secondary connection. How quickly should I expect external hosts route to my address space over the secondary connection; seconds, minutes, hours?

I've found it to be seconds, maybe 15 to 30 or so.

You should look into some route server to be sure both routes are being advertised before you test though.
