Hi guys,
Just wondering what the best way to clean up mailboxes is? Let's say I have a folder called "SPAM" that's in the root of the Users Mailbox Store (Same level as the inbox, sent items, deleted items, etc...) and I want to run a cleanup agent on that folder every week that will delete anything older than 15 days...don't move anything, just delete it. What's the best way of doing that? I thought Exchange 2003 had that stuff built in. Thanks everyone for the help!

I use Exmerge for doing that sort of thing. In 2003 there are some triky bits with permissions, but it works very well for that sort of thing.

It comes with Exchange, a few google searches should get you started.

Hey that's working great, thanks! Now a similar question. What about if I want to move items that are older than 60 days from Sent Items into the Deleted items folder?

Go to Exchange System Manager --> recipient policies.

Create a new policy and click on mailbox manager settings.

Give it some name and then click on the "Mailbox Manager Settings" tab.

You can change the settings under "when processing a mailbox" to move items to deleted folder.

Then make sure you select only the SENT ITEMS in the folder list and take off the size limit check. You can set it for however many days you like.

I forgot to tell you that in order for Mailbox Mangement to run you have to go to Administrative Group --> Servers --> your server --> properties --> Mailbox Management and let the system know when to run the process.

You know what, I've done exactly that and I don't think that it's working correctly. I figured I'd ask in case I was doing something wrong. Maybe I'll delete those policies and recreate them. It's almost as if it grabs some messages but not ones that are too old (Maybe ones that were already there when I migrated to exchange 2003 from 2000)

Almost forgot, star for you for helping me out with the ExMerge, works great!! Is it command based? Cause I'd like to make a weekly task of it.

You should set it to send a report to an administrator instead of actually running, that way you can check to see what it is, or is not finding.

Also double check to make sure the size limit isn't selected.
