Care to sound off on the best software choices for a new virtual server installation? We are looking at VMware, Virtual Iron, Citrix Xen Server, and Microsoft Virtual Server. Virtual Iron seems to be the cheapest, but cheaper isn't always better. I'd love to hear from those of you who have used some of these products to know what you think!

It depends what you want to do. VMware and Microsoft both offer free versions of their Virtual server products but of course they aren't going to do everything.

Also unfortunately asking this question in a MS VPC\VS product forum is going to get you some biased information.

Don't forget to look into Hyper-V from MS (runs on 2008) as well as VMware Server (essentially the old GSX software but runs on Windows and *Nix).

I personally like VMware but will be playing with Hyper-V soon as well.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.
