Hello,

I'm looking at a network that I've inherited and a question about the Primary & Secondary DNS settings on the primary DNS server.

Lets say the Primary DNS IP is 192.168.0.10 and the Secondary DNS IP is 192.168.0.11. Should the Primary DNS Server be setup with a Primary DNS of 192.168.0.10 (it's self) and Secondary DNS of 192.168.0.11 (backup DNS server)?

The Primary DNS server currently has a Primary DNS of 192.168.0.11 (backup DNS server) and no secondary DNS server - currently there is no issues with how it's working... but what is the 'best practise' for this?

Thanks,

There really is no best practice for this, either way is ok. What you are thinking about is WINS, and pointing WINS to itself. If your DNS servers are running on DCs, there is one benefit to pointing the Primary DC to the Secondary DNS and vice versa. That benefit is the DC does not have to wait for the DNS service to start locally, which means quicker boot times for your DCs.

Point the dns server at itself first, then external servers. If you've not been to a site before, the internal will have to go outside for info on the site. Once the site is found, the internal then has it in cache, so the next time you go, it's faster. Good luck.
