I recently bought an NEC DVD/RW from Newegg.com. It was an OEM version that didn't come with any software. Now I'm trying to decide what software I should get so that I can use the thing. Any recommendations? I would like to be able to make data disks and maybe some movies and am looking for the best software for those jobs. On the other hand I don't want to spend more than what I spent on the burner itself. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Is there a big difference between Nero Express and Nero Ultra?

Express is the 'lite' version. You lose some of the more high end functionality, but for basic needs, whether it be burning information or music CD's, working with iso images, etc... it gets the job done.

I have a cheap LG CDRW which shipped with Nero Express. It's worked fine enough as for some reason this burner won't cooperate with the XP CD writing functionality.

There are other freeware utilities, but I haven't tried enough of them lately to comment on them. What OS are you using?

I'm running Win XP pro sp1. Still haven't decided to take the plunge with sp2 yet.

I tried Nero, and abandoned it. It did things like making disks where it was not clear that Windows would not be able to read the CD/DVD. In other words, its defaults were very confusing. Roxio's Easy CD works a lot better. Roxio has a Digital Media Suite that claims to do it all. It has gotten the nod over Nero in the latest reviews from PC Mag, etc.

For the longest time, I was a big backer of Roxio. Even when Easy CD/DVD 6 came out, I was impressed. However, I found the lack of control over customizing DVD burning a bit disappointing. After trying out Nero 6 Ultra Edition, I haven't even looked back. It comes packaged with so many more advanced features, including Nero Recode which allows complete control over your DVD compilations. As a matter of fact, it is based off the popular DVD Shrink technology with an added tweak - the ability to cut out chapters/menus/special features that you don't want.

Roxio gets it done on CD burning, but Nero adds more for DVD.

POWER DVD also has nice recording software like their POWER Director software. I have never used it, only their power DVD Player software. I liked their player because you could get an OEM coply for $5.00 or so at some places.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Thanks to everyone for their advice. I ended up getting Roxio's Digital Media Suite. From all the reviews it was hard to decide between Roxio and Nero, but I found a great deal on Roxio which finalized my decision. No looking back now!

A bit complicated perhaps but FREE!

DVD Decrypter
DVD Shrink
These two programs can backup a 6/8gig dual layer DVD film and compress it neatly onto a standard 4.7 disk no probs still retaining DVD quality.
warning!
(for backup only! of course)

Standard burning software you can't beat Nero!!

Roxio Media Creator 7. My opinion, the latest and greatest.

I just don't think you'll find anything more solid than Nero Ultra. Worth the money.
