I'm new to adding printers to a Win 2k server, I have configured a new IP address of the LaserJet5n on the printer, also have set the subnet mask and default gateway of the printer to server controlling the printer.
I have tried doing a Add pritner and the printer is not recognized. What else do I have to do to get the pritner working on the network?
Thanks ahead of time for your help.

First ping the ip address of the printer. Make sure it is up and responsive. Many new printers have their own webpage you can access. Enter the printer's ip into your browser and there might be a connect to printer option on the page. If not here are directions to do it yourself:

Add a printer and select "local printer attached to this computer" BUT DO NOT select "Automatically detect and install my plug and play printer"

Then select "create a new port" ---> "standrd tcp/ip port .
Then enter the printer IP, select the drivers and you are good to go

Have you loaded the software that came with the printer on the server

Also since you hardcoded a IP address did you reserve it in DHCP (if you are running DHCP)

Many of the HP printers now require that you use the cd to have it installed on each workstation. At first we installed the printer on the server and shared it. After mapped the printer on each workstation. From time to time, the printer wasn't accessible... Later on, we tried using the cd on each workstation and it seems to have solved the problem. We tried this with HP3330 (multifunction), HP4200 and a few others. This always seem to work.

Thanks everyone for your post, as it turns out I was not able to ping the printer becuase I was not setting the IP address right in the HP printer.
I bought the printer used so there was no CD install.

Been using HP for too many years to think about. Get the driver from the HP site. Set the IP and net mask manually at the printer. IE to it and set everything else.

Add local printer, IP as detailed above. Works fine.
