Hello -
I've been using SQL Server 7 for about 6 months now, and I've been a web developer for about 3/4 years. I'm going to graduate from college (finally :) ) in about a year, and I am seriously considering becoming a DBA.

Ironically, I can't seem to figure out how one attains the position of a DBA or even Junior DBA. Luckily I work for a startup company, which gave me a lot of responsibility and gives me the opportunity to wear a lot of different hats, so that gives me the SQL Server experience that I need.

So I guess my ultimate question is how would I go about becoming a DBA or even a junior DBA? What kind of skill set do I need to start out?

I know this is a deviation from the typical tech questions that get asked, but I figure I should ask seasoned professionals for some good advice.

thanks in advance
leo

If you know that MS SQL Server is the product on which you wish to build your career, here's one piece of advice:

Study for and take (and eventually pass) either of the SQL Server tests (Developing/Implementing or Administration). These tests cover nearly every conceivable area of SQL Server, and studying for them will help you broaden your experience, since no single job would expose you to all facets of the product. Further, passing the exam would give some validation to your experience to a future employer. Robert Bradley
