BE9.0 manages 10MB of remote server, then gives up

Hello,

I have a BE9.0 (build 4454) server running W2K SP3, which backs up a dozen servers successfully. I've pushed (and pulled) the remote agent onto another W2K server which is in its own workgroup. When I try to back this server up it manages between 5 and 20MB of data before grinding to a complete halt. If I cancel the job, the job engine service fails and I get event 34113 - BE Job Engine system service is not responding.

Today it is not working.
Windows is like that.
