after 20 minutes of running time. It only backs up 1.8 gigs of data on one tape. The tape I am using holds more than 70 gigs(compressed) of data.

Okay, if you do a search on this forum you'll find LOTS of information on this issue.

Let me hit the high points....

You are doing backups allowing append but not overwrite. So, the backup appends to the end of an almost full tape. It can not overwrite the tape because part of the backup is already on it. So you need to put in a second tape. Period.

Check your Backup Exec job logs (right click on the job and select Job History) and the Windows Event Viewer logs for any error messages.

The backup job si set to overwrite, not append. I am thinking of uninstalling backupexec 9.1 rev 4691 and install backupexec 9.1 rev4691.1.

Did you check your job history and the error logs? Did you double check the overwrite/append settings for the tape in question?
