I have recently started to get a problem whereby the backup does not work and I am lost as to whether the problem is with BE or with the hardware. Sony tape utility can run a test backup/read/write of data with their own utility - which Sony assures me communicates directly with the hardware!! The SCSI card is an OEM - aic78xx driver and it would seem that Intel no longer support this card and no longer provide a driver - I say Intel as the adaptec site states that its OEM'd out to others and then they can do as they please, in this case it seems Intel.

The BE starts and the following is a detailed log of what happens, culminating in a error within BE stating that the hardware is offline. If you would read the log below and let me know your thoughts I would be most greatful, I am undecided as to whether its a hardware or software/backup issue. To start from the ground up I restarted the server:

On restarting the server there is automatically an error in the event log:

Source: Service Control Manager
Event ID: 7031

The Backup Exec 8.x Job Engine service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s) before. The following corrective action will be taken in 180000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

This initial error would seem to be whereby the backup exec cannot communicate with the server, ie the username and password are incorrect and hence the service fails to start, the server has no password (I know, security!!) and logs in as administrator, I assume that the backup exec uses the same as this worked previously.

Start up Backup Exec software and you can not create a new backup, it would seem that this is because of the error above. You cannot create a job as the Job Engine service has terminated, this happens another 3 times (the other 3 maybe where I had attempted to manually connect/authenticate – see below) and ends with the following error in the event log:

Source: Service Control Manager
Event ID: 7032

The Service control manager tried to take a corrective action (Restart the service) after the unexpected termination of the Backup Exec 8.x Job Engine service, but this action failed with the following error: An instance of the service is already running.

In the interim a backup has been running. It would seem that the backup Job Engine had started as I could browse the job selections, if the backup Job engine has not started then the browsing of the server is not allowed and does not allow you to select areas to backup.
In order to try and ‘authenticate’ the service onto the server you can, within Backup Exec:

Click Network
Click Connect to Media Server

Password is blank and the username is administrator

The backup starts and runs, the backup then shows an alert that the tape is being overwritten, all fine.
The backup runs for around 45 seconds and then counts up no more, after 8 minutes the alerts state (within BE) the following:

Drive information:

The drive hardware is offline!
Please confirm that the drive hardware is powered on and properly cabled

The only way to actually clear the job is to stop and restart all the backup exec services manually.
The services all restart and stay started for a few minutes while waiting, nothing is logged in the event log showing that services cannot start (so I assume they are all started)

Start Backup Exec server up, takes a while and states “Connecting to local Media Server”

Look in the services and the Job Engine has stopped

Look in the event viewer and see error 7031

Event ID: 7031

The Backup Exec 8.x Job Engine service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s) before. The following corrective action will be taken in 180000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

Click on the media tab within Backup Exec and the server name shows – Server Paused next to it

Right click and unpause

Nothing in event log

Restart the Backup Exec Job Engine service (this could be coincidental)

Error 7032

Source: Service Control Manager
Event ID: 7032

The Service control manager tried to take a corrective action (Restart the service) after the unexpected termination of the Backup Exec 8.x Job Engine service, but this action failed with the following error: An instance of the service is already running.

Right click to create a new job and can browse, suggesting that restarting the Job Engine service has reconnected the media server?

Nothing in the event log showing errors so all clear, can browse Backup Exec selections suggesting the media server is correctly authenticated, all services are started.

Right click backup job and click run now

Alert shows ‘overwriting allocated media”

Backup runs for 42 seconds and then pauses and goes no further

Event log shows error 7031:

Source: Service Control Manager
Event ID: 7031

The Backup Exec 8.x Job Engine service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s) before. The following corrective action will be taken in 180000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

Backup will go no further.

Backup Exec 8.x Job Engine service still shows as running

Alerts within Backup Exec shows Drive hardware offline after 8 minutes with the error:

Drive information:

The drive hardware is offline!
Please confirm that the drive hardware is powered on and properly cabled

Lastly

Tried to set the default attach info by clicking the backup selections tab and then Network tab, Set Default Attach Info – this seems to have made no odds what-so-ever.

The only thing that I can think of is to set a local admin password to log into the server, ie reset it to somethine else so that I can confirm it is connecting. And/or reinstall Backup Exec …….or, is this a hardware issue with the error within Backup Exec of ‘The drive hardware is offline’ – windows can see the backup device attached to the SCSI and the sony tape utility seems to have no problem backing up and re-writing/reading data.

If you have followed that through, I am very greatful, if you have any comments thoughts or suggestions I would be even more greatful

Cheers
