The very first name was intended to be MDS110. MDS=Modular Digital System. This turned out to be impossible because MDS was already occupied by a Motorola system, so the "S" was skipped.
110 is just a binary value and was choosen to indicate that it was a digital system.
This is the story behind the name "MD110".
Among the designers MDS110 got another meaning but it only makes sense in Swedish. The first system was to be shipped in the autumn of 1982 and they translated the name to a sort of prayer that it should be completed to 1/10 (=October 1).
Did you all know by the way, that the MD110 was originally designed by a Swedish company called Ellemtel which was a joint venture between the Swedish PTT and Ericsson. Later Ericsson became the sole "owner" of the MD110.
Ellemtel also designed the AXE system. The company does not exist any more and both MD110 and AXE are of course now Ericsson products.
MDS was a name of a product from Motorola. I don´t know what sort of system or product it was but since the name was occupied they decided to skip the "S".
Sorry guys, the letters does not really mean anything not even in Swedish
Ericsson has a classification system and have assigned certain letters codes for different sorts of systems or products. These letter codes together with a number form the specific article code.
Some examples:
ROA, ROE, ROF are codes for printed circuit boards.
TSR and RPM are cables.
DBC are telephones.
