First off I am new to VPN.

I am hoping to use a Windows 2003 server, with one NIC, behind a firewall, as a VPN Server that will allow remote users to connect to our network.

We are using a sonicwall pro 100 firewall.

Am I required to use the firewall as a vpn server and use sonicwall global clients or is it possible to configure the pro 100 to allow vpn traffic to pass through to a Windows 2003 VPN Server and use the windows vpn client set up on my remote machines?

The port forwarding seems straight forward (point 500 and 4500 to the VPN server). However, it is unclear to me how to change the IP protocol ID to 50 which appears necessary to allow L2TP/IPsec traffic.

Insights and suggestions would be appreciated.

Doesn't the PRO100 come with VPN capability? Why not use that as your VPN server?

Thanks for the response.

Cost. I have the 2003 Server. I would need to purchase the vpn server license for the sonicwall and a client licenses for each user.

If there is a way to use a windows vpn server and the windows vpn client setup I don't have to purchase any additional licenses.

The question remains: is it a possible to configure the sonicwall to allow vpn traffic through without using the sonicwall's vpn server?

If so, how?
