PLZ..
I have a 20gig hdd with >95% of drive having bad sectors.I "NEED" some amount of data from the drive badly.I used GetDataBack for FAT to get the files..but to no avail...no single file emerged from the recovery tree...OnTrack's Easy Recovery cannot help me either...I used HDD Regenerator to fix the bad sectors-It just reports it...it can't fix it..Can anybody help me ....Plz instruct me on how to go around this...ASAP..Plzzzz

What kind of files are you trying to recover, you may have to make do with partials and reconstruct them if they are word docs or pictures etc. Also whats the history behind the failure.

Thanks Nipester...
I'm actually doing this for a friend...basically Word documents....The drive doesn't grind....no unusual noises....but he tried copying some files earlier ,whilst it was a master drive...but the files won't copy...he doesn't know much about these stuff...turned the system off and tried to reboot...the bios reports of an iminent failure..and wouldn't boot....he has a new hdd at the moment..but we need the files from this old one....Partition Magic reports of an invalid drive.....seems the partition table and the MBR are messed up.....Tried SpinRite6.0 yesterday...Level 2 ...for Emergency Data Recovery....it sees it as an Add-on Controller..cannot retrieve the drive details...and hence unable to access the entire range of sectors...giving me some RED writings..the Drive had a FAT32 file system whilst it was functional....

Found this on the net yesterday...chk this site.. about it..but basically don't know how to proceed using it....

Nipester..and any other person..plz help me out...

Thank-you.

Ok try this. Burn a knoppix live CD or make a couple of linux boot floppies. Boot up in them and run fdisk /dev/hda and then in fdisk type "p" to see what fdisk sees. There could be a chance that the partition label is no longer set to FAT32. In linux you may be able to STILL mount the drive as a FAT32 partition, or you could use linux fdisk to label it as a FAT32 partition again. Partition magic also has a tool called PTINFO or PTEDIT I think, it runs in DOS. You can also use that to view the partition label. A partition label is basically a value that determines if the partition is supposed to be seen as NTFS, FAT16, FAT12, FAT32 etc.

Thanks Nipester....
I'm currently downloading an iso of the Knoppix Live CD from an ftp rightnow....but I noticed that the size is >700MB....723,064,832......Can that really fit on a normal CD..700MB....unless we are talking about DVD-R's here...Is there a place I can download the Linux boot floppies from..coz I don't have a linux installed on any of my systems....I think this boot stuff is supposed to help me make my file system back to FAT32....but..what ware do u think I should use to get the data With the GetDataBack for FAT32 AND NTFS...It can pull data even if the file system is messed up...the only prior that you need is the file system of the drive when in use...but that CAN'T get data from bad sectors...

I managed to get the knoppix live CD burnt ...I just underatand why it was reporting 723mb on disk... ..I was running /sbin/ fdisk /dev/hdb and then in fdisk type "p" to see what fdisk sees so that I would see whether I could STILL mount the drive as a FAT32 partition,.(fdsik is located in the sbin directory)..BUT!!!!!!!...........As I run the /sbin/ fdisk /dev/hdb comamnd...in the
Shell - Bash ....it reports "Not a directory"...and it also gives me the same feedback with the master drive....hda.....Is there something I'm doing wrong....?????...can somebody please help me ASAP.How can I re-label the partition FAT32 n how can I proceed..plz help me......Thanks.

yes the idea of linux fdisk was to relable the partition as FAT32. But record the label of what the partition was before you change it, just in case you want to undo it. You have to mount the partition to see the files. First you would make a mount point, say: mkdir /d or mkdir /c

and then

mount /dev/hda1 /c -t vfat

Then you could possibly see the files in linux. Or, if you reboot you could very well see them in windows now. One hint, DONT let chkdsk operate if you can help it, because it has no undo and can chew up your files.

Nipester...
I'm not being allowed to create a directory...Permission Denied....I evn attempted creating a directory on the master drive..hda...I was denied..does it mean ..I the drive is read-only when we use the Knoppix Live CD...DOES IT MEAN..I HAVE TO INSTALL Linux on the master drive?????

the root of the knoppix filesystem is mounted in RAM not on any hard drive. / is the root of the filesystem in RAM and you have read/write access to it. /dev/hda is the first IDE hard drive and you probably have it mounted readonly, as with the second drive /dev/hdb. Type mount to see if they are mounted ro or rw and then unmount and remount if needed. Are you even able to read the data in the damaged hard drive? See anything? Did you relable to FAT32?

Tried it.....it was the "su" at the sommnad line that was missing....needed that to get to the root..this time I was able to do the fdisk and cfdisk...with the master hdd..its perfect....I can get to see the number of cylinders and it gave me all the other options...with the problem hdd....on executing cfidsk /dev/hdb....the user interface that appears says..FATAL ERROR..Cannot Read Disk Drive...Press any key to exit cfdisk..on fdisk/dev/hdb....message that appears is.."Unable to read dev/hdb"....Where do I go from here????..Plz help me..!!!!

Type this:

dmesg | grep hd

and you will get a list of /dev/hd that were detected. See if /dev/hdb is even on there. It may be /dev/hdc or /dev/hdd. The dmesg dump will also give you the manufacturer associated with the particular hard drive which will helo in identifying it.

If linux fdisk chokes then since you say you have partition magic, theres a DOS utility, I think its called PTINFO or PTEDIT. Use that to try and relabel the partition to FAT32.

Nipester...plz chk out these outputs for me..

knoppix@ttyp0[knoppix]$ su
root@ttyp0[knoppix]# fdisk /dev/hda

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 5169.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

I would disconnect the hard drive. It seems pretty bad. You need to decide if its worth it to pay a recovery service to grab the data. What I would do now, is learn to use that SCAVEN program you found, on ANOTHER hard drive. Practice using it. Then apply it on the bad hard drive, the more time you spend on a bad hard drive the more you damage the data...so disconnect it for now.
