Hi all,

I'm quite a newbie in SQL Server. I just upgraded an Access-application to an Access Project using SQL Server. I have SQL Server 2000 but I'm wondering if it would give any problems when I want to install this application (Access Project Front-end and SQL Server Backend) at a client's that has an earlier version of SQL Server (6.5 or 7.0 I guess) Do you know whether this is possible? Is it difficult to make the backward-conversion?

Thanls a lot in advance for your help!

Greetz,

Dirk

We've recently started using Access Data Projects (ADP) to get to our SQL backend too, and I don't recall ever seeing anything in the books about running against SQL 6.5/7.0. I'd bet my hat it won't work with 6.5 at all, and very likely won't work with 7.0 either - all the references I've seen are to SQL2K.

An alternative might be to supply your customers with an install of MSDE, however - it's essentially the engine of SQL2K without the UI, and is free for redistribution under some licensing scenarios.

Hi Tim,

thanks for your reply. I don't know yet whether it's possible to convert a SQL Server 2000 database to an earlier version but I found an explanation on the Microsft pages that might interest you too:

There is stated that you can use Access Projects with SQL Server 7.0 and 6.5.
