I realize this is not the BE forum, but I've got a question for you guys running it on Netware.

I recently got the Open File Option (BE 9.0), so I could back up my Groupwise volume without shutting down the post office. It keeps failing when I try to start the BE service.

Reading through the Administrator's Guide, on page 512, at the bottom almost as a footnote, it says "The volumes you want to back up with the OFO must be traditional Netware volumes; NSS volumes are not supported."

How do you guys handle this?! Surely I'm not the only one running NSS...

Oh, BTW, St Bernard's Open File Manager doesn't support NSS on NW 5.0 either.

It's been a bad day. Excuse me while I step over here and shoot myself.

I know next to nothing about Groupwise (5.55), I inherited this mess and the first thing I want to do is get some backups.

I am running TSA500, SMDR, etc. on the server where GW is. Are you saying that GW has its own TSA? And possibly has its own backup routines?

5.5 does have a tsa

you dont really need to shut poa down for a backup
fair enough you will not get a backup of wphost but this can be recreated anyway as long as you have the dc's

there are backup routines for gw 5.5
some kind of copy - would need to read up on it again - been a long time

Thanks for the help, I did find the GWBACKUP and DBCOPY utilities for backing up Groupwise.

This still doesn't help me back up my other NSS volumes, though... We're about to upgrade to NW6 and I'm thinking of throwing NSS out the window, unless you guys know of good reasons to keep it.

I don't think NSS is your problem, it is the backup software that may not be NSS aware. I use ARCserve and had v6.6 running on NW 5.0 and CA did not post it as NSS compatable but it worked OK for me. Maybe somewhere along the line an SP fixed the problem. I now run ARCserve 9 on NW 6.0 and it is fully NSS aware as well as ready for NW 6.5 with the latest SP applied. I even use the GWTSA to back up my GW 6.0 system.
I don't think it's a good idea to throw out NSS as this seems to be the way Novell is heading in the future. I run all my NW 6.0 servers exclusivly on NSS volumes and do not have any problems.
Check with the BE folks to see if they have a patch to fix your problem.

NSS sounds like good stuff to me too, but this backup bizness is rediculous. BE has no patch, they flat claim not to support NSS with their Open File Option. We spent several hundred hours on the phone with Arcserve and they could not get it to work (and once burned, twice shy).

We are planning to upgrade to NW6 soon.
