I want to back up my windows 98 (first edition) system files using MS Backup incase of virus or missing files. Which system files in window folder are the most important to backup? Can you list the files?

Many thanks

You can always extract files using sfc (system file checker), so I wouldn't worry about those. Even if you couldn't boot to windows, you can always boot to dos and extract them using the extract command. I always backup the registry before I make any changes on a computer, the easiest way to do it is to run REGEDIT, then select Registry>Export, and save it somewhere. You can put it on a floppy or a cd if you like, but usually not needed. I never backup anything using msbackup, because that complicates your ability to restore quickly. What if a virus attacks executables, then you cannot run that program. I agree with panderson, backup those files, burn them to a cd (or a floppy) somewhere safe, then in the future, just make a registry backup every couple weeks or so. Windows does this automatically so you can run the scanreg /restore command from dos, but I like to have my own.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.
