I'm using DLT 40 tapes and I have a small number of which that work fine in one drive but read as being write protected in another but I can catalog just fine. Both systems are using NTBACKUP, one is on WIN2003 and the other WIN2000 with different internal tape drives.

Any clue, why I can use these tapes on server and not the other

That is exactly the promblem, one device is a DLT 40 and the other a DLT VS 80. If found the answer on the Quantum website. The problem tapes have been written on by the DLT40 and the DLT VS 80 will read from these tape but it will not write back on the opld tape format.

The only way I know of the re-use these 4 tapes is find a degauser for 4 tapes? Does anybody know of any services for this.

Chears.

Waitting for a little blue line to move accross the screen is a good way to take a break.
