Backup problems

Looking at our backup files, it appears that individual exchange mailboxes are not being backed up.

I have tried connecting to each mail box through explorer, but I get "access is denied" pop up errors messages.

Does anyone know where the rights to exchange are assigned?

What program are you using to do backup for your mail? If using the bundled Win2K backup, you cannot backup individual mailboxes just the entire information store (which contains all these mailboxes).
If you wish to backup individual mailboxes, have a look at 3rd party backup software from veritas or arcserve etc. This is generally referred to as bricklevel backup.

Yes I am just using the bundled Win2K backup.

So in effect it will backup the top level store, but not each individual mailbox. Ok

Why would I not be able to look at each of the individual mailboxes through explorer?

You do not have rights.
But any experienced Exchange admin will tell you three things :
D0 NOT touch/(attemp to modify) the M drive
DO NOT let an antivirus touch M drive
DO NOT Backup the M drive

Stick by these three rules and forget any questions which will break them.

I have adhered by these rules up to now.

However I find myself in a situation where I need to move exchange from one drive (M to (D because we are running out of disk space.

I am concerned that at the moment, I am struggling to get a full backup and am worried some files will be lost when using the exchange optimiser to move exchange to the D: drive.
