Backup Exec 8.60 Rev 3808 on Win2k3SP1
Exchange Server 2000 on Win2kSP4

Old backup machine is being replaced by a new one, so everything is having to be set up again. Had no problems attaching to individual mailboxes with the old server, however, with the new server, I'm getting "Backup Exec could not attach to this Exchange server" when I try providing the unique admin account for the Backup Exec services.

I have gone though this entire link ( to verify that I did not miss anything. The backup account is set up as a full exchange admin and can access other mailboxes without any problems. The account is also a member of the domain admins and the local machine admin group.

In Backup Exec, when I expand the mail server and then click on the "Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes" folder, the "Attach to device..." dialog box pops up and I enter the backup exec mailbox name and I get the message stated above about not being able to attach to the server.

I have tried to find the solution by searching the old posts, and perhaps I have just missed it, but any help would be appreciated.

Hi I have the same problem and it is driving me crazy. I am running server 2003 and exchange 2003 on the same server. My accounts have all the proper permissions but I get the same error trying to attach to the exchange resources. I would appreciate any suggestions

Is the Backup Exec mailbox hidden in the Global address list? If it is unhide it and cycle the Backup Exec services.

When using the logon account to attach as to the mailboxes - the logon account should be the mailbox display name in exhange and leave the passwore blank

mailbox is visible and i'm using the correct mailbox name

Ok I think I might have found my problem in the Job Setup if you click on the job in my case daily then click on the Microsoft exchange mailboxes and Microsoft exchange public folders to expand it brings up a list of accounts that log on the Administrator account that was logging on shows restricted I clicked on edit took the check mark out of restricted it now shows default and I'm going to cross my fingers that the backups run without error tonight

Sounds like Sarah's problem was different than mine.

In Backup Selections, I expand the exchange server and when I try to click on "Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes" to expand it, the Attach to Device dialog box comes up and that's where my issue is. Still.

I had a problem similar to yours attaching and had to reinstall remote agent on my sql server and my other domain server I am however running backup exec 10 Can you attach to anything at all on the exchange server? If not you may want to try reinstalling the remote agent..run it from the dos prompt setupaa for backup exec 10 I also had to run setupaofo to set up advanced open file option

I can attach to the "Microsoft Information Store" and to the "Microsoft Site Replication Service" (and all subsequent folders within each of those) with no problem. It's just the "Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes" that is giving me issues connecting to.

Just retracing steps today and trying anything I could, I (for the third or fourth time) stopped the BE services and restarted them and tried again, and viola! I can now access the Mailboxes.

Problem solved. Now, if only I felt more confident as to what the exact solution was.

Thats always the way in IT but as long as it eventually works we are all happy

Well I did not solve my problem Came in this morning and the backup failed again. Still cannot attach. The account it is using is the Admin account it doesn't show that it's restricted anymore but what does Steve mean by the logon should be the same as the mailbox name?? It cannot attach to Exchange Mailboxes and Exchange Public folders I'm running Server 2003 and Exchange 2003 on the same server with Backup Exec 10.0
