Backup Exec 8.6 Not Recognizing New or Used Media!

I have a problem with BE 8.6 where it is not recognizing any media, even new ones. I don't see an option to format the tapes either. I am new here and I noticed that the drive had never been cleaned, so I bought a cleaning tape and did that, but no difference at all. No backups have been made since well over a month ago. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks,
