Backup Exec 8.5 and eraseing before backing up

Question on how to set the erase bit on tapes.

I am coming into a client where they have daily back ups set and are using Veritas Backup Exec 8.5. The backups are full backups on one server. The tapes are being rotated. What I found was that the tapes are prompting for a "Can I overwrite this media" before starting, which is causing the jobs to hang.

Now, in the jobs, they are set to Append to media, overwrite if no appendable media is found. Is this why they are geting prompted? SHould I just set the job to "overwrite media"?

Yes, just set to overwrite.

P.S. Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

go into Tools, options, Media, there is a check box in there asking to prompt before overwrite, uncheck this.
