I have 2 servers both NW 6 sp3 trying to migrate one to the other. I keep getting an error about "backup.DNS" was not created.(During step 3) Has anyone had this issue before? Any help would be great..
This is what I eventually did and it worked great.
1. Migrated the file system using the Migration wizard (Bring over the system files by replying yes to the SYS.MIG question - You'll need them).
2. Performed step 2 with the configuration files. Only update the autoexec. The balance will come over in a later step.
3. Exit the Migration Wizard but keep the connects to both servers active.
Before proceeding read TID 10010933 all the way through - several times. Believe me I used it on a 6 to 6 migration.
4. Perform the DSmaint procedure. This copied NDS from the source server to the destination server. Run it on the Source first, copy the output file (00000001.nds or something like that) to the workstation. Important: do not lose your connection to the source before copying this file.
5. Disconnect the source server from the hub (you should have created a small LAN containing the 2 servers and your PC for this).
6. During step 2 of the migration wizard you should have renamed the Dest. server with the Source server name, changed the Serverid #, etc... details are in the TID.
7. Reboot the dest. server so that it now comes up as the source server.
8. Log in and copy the 00000001.nds file to it.
9. Remoce DS from the dest server.
10. Restore DS as described in TID. If you get an error that it couldn't do it, choose ok and the choose skip to the next file (there is also a TID on this).
11. Reboot and do a Dsreapir as in TID.
12. Source and Dest. servers were at the same OS and patch level so don't be afraid to perform this: Copy the contents on the sys.mig\system dir to the sys:system dir. Repeat for all. NOTE: if you are running a webserver on this server, don't forget to copy the Novonyx directory.
13. Make sure the hosts file has the correct info.
Test...test...test....done.
I remeber pretty much of it cause I just did it 1.5 weeks ago.
P.S. The dsmaint stuff was pretty simple and quick.
