Backup Device Error

I have a Quantum DL 160 attached to a Windows 2003 storage Server. I use the build in backup and restore system that Microsoft has with Windows 2003 Storage Server.. The backup works, but when I go to catalog the tape (before the restore) it will try to catalog it and then it says: “Backup device error” (therefore I am unable to restore from it) How do I fix this? I tried a new tape and no difference.

Do you mean NTBackup?
Is the tape device a SCSI? Is it capped off properly?
