Hello,

we use roaming profiles and redirected My Documents in our W2k network. The "My Documents" files are stored in a server, which also is the DC. The My Docs directories in the server have only the owner's permissions to do anything, and I'd prefer it that way.

Now, I'd like to create an exact image of the server's HD so in case anything goes wrong I can get it up and running exactly the way it was without having to tweak it at all. Is this possible with NTBackup? If I backup the drive and system state, can it read and store the redirected my docs even when there are no permissions for admins or system to do anything with the folders? If not, what would you suggest, other than RAID? (The backups are first created to a file and then burnt to DVD-R)

HI!

In NT/2000, Administartors (and Backup and Server operators groups) have a right called "Backup files" which means that the backup program can backup files that you don't have NTFS permissions to.

Just make a test and verify if I'm correct about this.

If you still have problems, you can add Read only permissions to the "Interactive" special group. This gives rights only to the OS and whom is sitting by the computer - but there is a catch here - users of IIS or Terminal Services are also considered "Interactive".
If you don't run IIS nor TS then it might be relevant.

You can also make an image of server with 3rd party cloning software like Norton GHOST. I don't think it cares about NTFS permissions when copying (you don't login...) but it can make an exact image of anything on disk (including copying the NTFS permissions).
