Hello,

we are using Arcserve 2000 on our w2k domain to backup data. Recently we installed a w2k server with the program Microsoft Navision 3.70.
The installation of the software was done by another company.

Now I want to add this server to our backup strategy, including the Navision database. Has anybody got experience with backing up the Navision database?
Is it just copying the directory with the database to tape? Or do I need to stop Navision first, before I can access the database? I'm asking, because I don't want to experiment and then find out that I messed up the database... believe, they (the ones that entered hundreds and hundreds of records into Navision) will NOT be pleased with that! :)

Okay, I hope somebody can help me. Thanks in advance.

Not familure with this database.

It all depends on how it works. If it works like Notes then OFA will work. If it is like most other databases it will be necessary to stop it prior to backup. That can probably be done via a Pre command and then use a Post command to start it back up after the backup.

Check the database that Navision is running on. If it is installed on Microsoft SQL server you can just use SQL's native backup capabilities or the ARCserve SQL database agent.

No problem Segil, you can do Navision database backup online. We make it everyday. The only tricky thing is the restore. In my case I have to do it by session and through the w2k client Agent, in other case It does not restore, but I think that this is due to our ARCServe installation. Anyway it works. I have restored it many times.
Good luck.

Thanks for your response! I will install the Arcserve
client and include the Navision server in the backup job.

Kind regards.
