Currently using ArcServe 2000 workgroup edition ver 7.0 build 1018. Recently upgraded our server to win2k3 now using the efs to encrypt sensitive data at rest. Arcserve however is unable to backup these folders. Error:
2571 w3546 unable to open encrypted file (file=X:\X\X.dat ec=sharing violation).

How can I get arcserve to backup these files is it possible do I need to upgrade the arcserve software and to what. Any help or suggestions to this are greatly appreciated.

AS2000 was never ever supported on Win2K3 - you need to upgrade to 9 or later. Encrypted files aren't a problem for ARCserve in general, it's more likely that the unsupported platform is causing the false reporting.

Thanks vschumpy do you know if computer associates offers a upgrade software or do you have to buy a complete new package.

You should be eligible for an upgrade version instead of having to shell out for a full version. I think they still include AS2000 in the latest 'upgrade from' list.

Check with your local reseller for more information, or with your account manager if you normally buy direct from CA.

We also had this problem before upgrading to Win2k3 server, we could not back up encrypted files on a Win2k server we had the same error message. Is anybody using arcserve to back up encrypted files and if yes what version and O.S. do you have in loaded on.

The version you are running (Build 1018) is unpatched (very very old). It's possible that encrypted files were a problem with the unpatched version - it really was a bit of a nightmare unpatched. There were 5 major service packs for AS2000. You can find the patch information here (you would only need SP5 for all 5 service packs - they are cumulative):

Actually part of the SP5 fixlist hints at a possible hit for this problem:

[T352017] BrightStor ARCserve 2000 can now back up and restore files using Windows encryption on machines with Windows XP or Windows 2000 and Service Pack 3 installed.

You still need to upgrade for the server OS to be supported though.
