Hey does anybody know why my desktop background color keeps going back to black every time I reboot or relogin? I have a bluish picture and I want the icon color to match.(the background color) I've tried turning on active desktop but that doesnt help either. Oh and in the settings its still on blue - its just not showing it, I have to change it and then change it back again for it show.

The desktop settings are different for the default user to individual users. Perhaps this is your problem. CHeck to see who is logged on when you change the background, and again when it changes. ;-)

No thats not it. I change it under my ID and then when I log back in under my name its black again. Thanks though.

Is this a regular blue colour, or one you made up using the More button? When you change it, does Apply get ungreyed so you can click it before OK? What depth of colour are you running the video at?

If you want the computer to save all your setting taht you have before you turn the computer off. You will have to when you login put you a login name and password therefore when you load and logon with that information it will know what to load for your setting.

I'm using 32 bit color (I dont have 24, just 16 and 32. So I have to put it at 32 for the graphics I make. And yes I'm using a custom color. And thadwalt, I did log in under my name and pw to change the settings and when I come back and find them messed up. Paulwood: Yes, I click apply and then OK.
I even checked the win.ini and it DOES show the correct RGB for the bg color. wierd...

anybody have anymore suggestions?? I'm stuck.

I'm gonna try messin around some more and see what i get. BRB...

OK, heres what i got.

I boot to win98, dont log in.

I go to desktop settings and set the background color as the stardard teal. No pic, just a color.

I hit apply and then ok.

I reboot. dont log in

The back comes up as teal but under the icons its black!!!

Strange.. Any suggestions?

I'm a little suspicious of the video drivers, normally I would expect more than two options if they had installed properly. Are they exactly the right ones for your card? Have you tried unistalling and then reinstalling?

Yea, they are the exact ones. But thats normal for this card. (Diamond Viper V330 [Nvidia Riva 128])

Hmm, shows how much I know!

This card has TV out, right? If video capture or a TV tuner is used it has to have video overlay at some level, either hardware or software. This blanks out parts of the screen to show video in instead. If this is built into the card/drivers it may be that there is an overlay problem. Have you looked at the manufacturers site to see if there are any such issues?

Yea it does have a video out but it never used to have this problem, its pretty recent and I can't figure out what caused it.

OK, the way I see it, there are two most likely options.
1. Driver problem, driver has got corrupted either because of a system crash or a badly behaved program, this is by far the most likely. It may have resulted in a corrupted registry entry.

2. Hardware, the card has developed a hardware problem that only effects specific actions, this is less likely but still possible. If it's just the one colour it's unlikely to be a cable problem.

Assuming you didn't added hardware or software that caused it, I really can't think of anything else, other than keep away from that specific colour or use one of the regular ones.

I got it at last! Its your #3 paulwood. I've got this program called DoubleDesktop that makes virtual desktops, it has an option for changing the desktop color and the icon back color - its default was black.

MAN! All that and the problem was a simple little option I didn't know existed!

Thanks everyone.

Big relief all round! Glad it's sorted! I guess I'll remember that one.
