I am using Word97 to produce catalog sheets for our products. The file is stored on a network drive. If I print it from Computer A it is fine. If I open the file on Computer B the background color (red) looks fine, BUT as soon as I click the print icon (or open page setup and then click OK), the background color changes to an orange color. The printed page has orange background instead of red.
It is obviously a problem within word and I have exhausted all my ideas like copying the normal.dot from the "good" computer.
This is causing us great frustration and I would be grateful for any assistance.

Hi alpder,

Are you using Word 97 on both computers? I ask because 97 has a limited range of colours and if you use one (in a newer version of Word) that 97 doesn't have, and then edit the document in 97, the colour will be changed to the closest 97 can manage.

I can't think of anything else, apart from perhaps the printer driver, which would cause this.

Enjoy,
Tony

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes we are using Word97 on both PCs. They both have only 1 printer defined...the same network printer.
Do you have any other thoughts?

Hmm, I wonder if this could be another one of those print issues affected by display drivers. Are both PCs using the same graphics cards, drivers and driver settings?

Also, with the printer drivers, are they configured the same? Simply using the same network printer isn't enough.

Cheers

Hi macropod,

Thanks for your input. The network printer setup is identical on both PCs, but the graphics cards are different. Can this cause a problem like this?

Quite possibly, which is why I raised the issue. Of course, that's not to say that it's definitely the cause, but it may be.

Cheers

Hi macropod,

Both PCs have new LCD monitors (new=last 12 month). The monitors are a reputable brand with the same specs, but unfortunately they have different graphics card - one is Intel 82865G and the other is GeForce MX/MX 400. I am trying to get this problem resolved as soon as possible, and do not want to have to check this theory by changing the cards over.
Unfortunately, I am running out of options. The strange thing is that on the problem PC I can open the file and it will be OK as long as I don't do anything (like open page setup dialog).
Thanks for your help.

The other possibility, of course, is that the Word installation on the problem PC has become corrupt. AFAIK, Word 97 doesn't have the 'detect and repair' capacity of later versions, so you might have to do a refresh, or uninstall/reinstall.

Cheers

Thans macropod....I have just purchased Office 2003 and will install it in the next day or so and see if that solves the problem.

Hi all,

Well I have just installed Word 2003 and the problem has been overcome. Thanks for your help.
