Back up failure

Please help I am in a deep hole and drowning fast. I am looking after some clients for a friend while he is on holiday. They are running Windows server 2000 and their back up is not working. They got the following error message which means nothing to me or anywhere I have looked. MSDN Google etc.

Device\hard disk\DM volume\physical\WINNT\System32\WINDLL host.exe

They did have a virus on this machine Nachi but we have eliminated it and re-created the damaged file. What else should I check?
