I love TDL sets .... but the 4424LD costs a lot of money! It needs it's own power supply but has a really cool blue flouresent display. Normally used for reception positions. The Partner phones act differently on the Magix but will be cheaper.

Well, it is a MAGIX phone, whereas the Partner set is an AFTERTHOUGHT on Legend and Magix.
Thus, it can do EVERYTHING, and the BUTTONS MAP CORRECTLY.
The High Dollar one (4424LD+) is back lit and has GREEN LETTERS in the BIG WINDOW, making it easy to see in the dark, you know, like a Communication room or something.
The draw back is that you are limited as to how many you can have on a system. (I would have to look that up) But I am sure you could easily use 8 in a Magix System.
Of course, they must connect to a TDL Module.
But, if you got a Magix, all you gotta' do is plug it in....

Why are illuminated displays so rare? Yes, it adds a dollar or two to manufacturing cost. But it's such a clear winner. If AT&T could figure that out 15 years ago for the Partner sets (and using system power, not a stupid wall-wart), why not carry the idea forward into all the display sets? To me, this is a true product differentiator.

If it was a show stopper, they would have done it.

Hi merlinman,
Boy, can you ever tell Partner and Magix / Legend were created by different teams. It would be great if they talked to each other. I think the backlight thing may have been a power issue on the high density TDL cards. I don't know on the 8 circuit MLX cards. My Partner customers do like the backlight.

To answer Papagig's question, try this site:
There was some influence from Legend to Partner.
Things we didn't like about Legend were able to get changed, even in the documentation.
If you will notice, the Partner documentation has a Menu in the back of the book, like the Leged had a Menu (Section H, as I recall) but the Partner one has PAGE NUMBER references as well as how to do it included with the MENU.
As far as Back Lit and other SET features, it was all a matter of cost of product.
The Partner back lit sets would work, but the button mapping and other things make them less desirable.

I have the distinct impression that Papagigo only needs a few of these sets at this site.

Per the POCKET REFERENCE MANUAL (Edited to save space):

Yeah, but..... The 4424LD+ telephones work on ANY TDL port, not just Operator ports. So you could have it as a "regular" extension, with just its SA buttons, no Line buttons, and whatever else you needed and still have the big lighted display.
And whats reeely fussy?
I cannot speak for the 9040, but I think that for the 1340 *%(@#$ dollars I paid for my transtalk 9031, it shoulc have at least have a backlight. But nope, I have to go hold it under the desk lamp.
Who is the dingaling that designed these displays??

the 9031 does have a backlight, I forget which button it is, but, if you press the double arrow shift button for 5 seconds it will go into program mode. If you press the B, I believe it's for the bell, V is for viberate on and off, and I'm thinking it's the D or 3 for display on or off. Well, it is either the 3,4,5,7,or 8, anyway, you will see it turn on and off.
According to the 9031 manual:
Enabling or Disabling Backlighting
Backlighting for the display is factory set to ON for the MDW 9031 Pocketphone. To toggle the Backlighting features OFF (and ON), use the following procedure:
Make sure the handset is turned off.
Press and hold the Select button for three seconds.
While still holding Select press On/Off
The handset beeps twice, and the display shows the handset settings, indicating you are in Local Mode. (While in Local Mode, the MDW 9031 can still receive notification of incoming calls.)
Press "L" (5) for "Lighting. " The Backlighting toggles ON or OFF each time you press 5.
After setting the correct Backlighting state, press On/Off for normal Pocketphone use.
