Just upgraded (wiped and installed from scratch)a Windows 98 client to XP SP2. The server is W2k Fully SPed DC.
When the client boots it takes a long time to login (2 mins)and once logged in gives the error
not all drive were mapped.
net use shows one drive as disconnected and another as unavailable.
Mapped printer ports (required for legacy app) all work as expected.
If I delete and manually map the drives they work correctly.
Have checked share and NTFS permissions on server and all look ok.
any advice or pointers would be gratefully appreciated.

Slow logging on and failure to map sounds like incorrect DNS settings, or have you already checked?

Have you checked to log files on the client. Did you make any changes to the server? If not, have you thought about posting this in the xp forum?

meastaugh1 - Have not looked at DNS. Would this be a client or server problem.
Also would this account for intermittent slow response times when using MS Word.
If I switch to another app then back to Word it can take up to 20 seconds for the cursor to move for a doc saved on the server. If the document is saved on the local drive this problem does not occur.
Glen - thanks for the input, but since the problem is to do with logging into a W2k DC I think this forum is more appropriate. Did not make any changes to the server.
Will try looking at DNS as suggested by M1

On the client, it's just from my own experience when I've added a new client to the network and just completely forgotten to setup all the network settings correctly. I've noticed if you I hadn't got DNS setup properly everything just responds slowly (unsurprisingly). It's worth a look anyway.

Hi M1,
you hit the nail on the head.
Checked my client settings and WINS and DNS were pointing to my router instead of the server.
Works fine now.
Thanks again.
