[b]PC won't pull IP address from Home Router[/b]

This is a weird one. My pc acts strange when I connect it to my home router. It keeps showing me that my network cable is unplugged on my taskbar. So I opened my network connections and viewed the activity there. I noticed that it would open the connection for a few seconds then suddenly it would disable it.

My pc uses winXP. I have a netgear router. The port my pc connects to is fine. I tested another laptop on that port and was able to get an ip and connect to the internet. This lead me to believe that my network card could be faulty. So, before I replaced it I decided to take my pc to work and connect it directly to the lan there. It worked fine!!!!!!!!!!![/color red]

I must be losing my mind here. Why won't it work at home then? Can anyone help me...

First of all, when you tested the connection at home on the other laptop that worked fine, did you use the same ethernet cable? Just checking because they can easily be damaged.

Assuming that's not the issue, I would suspect improper WINS & DNS settings under TCP/IP. Go into the properties for your network connection and remove all "hard-coded" entries for the protocol. Both WINS and DNS should be set to obtain automatically with no entries under advanced. This is usually why a laptop works on one network, but not another.

If your NIC shows "disconnected" it's probably a physical layer issue...not a WINS or DNS problem.

Check to see if your NIC card has its Speed and Duplex settings hard coded...(i.e. - it can't autosense what the router wants to do).

Set it to auto...or try different values of 100/10 Meg and Full/Half Duplex.

I agree this is a speed,duplex issue . If you are going to a netgear router it must be set up as auto and also setup as dhcp to pull the address from the router . Make sure the router is setup to give out the addreses.
