I have a win-XP/PRO-dual booting with win/98se.
I have a lite-on DVD/CD burner which I cannot boot from.
The BIOS boot sequence is floppy, CD-ROM, HDD. [Also tried CD, Floppy, HDD]
I can read from the burner as well as burn from it.
I have a Mad Dog DVD/CD combo which I have swapped into the lite-on's place on the cable with no change.
All jumpers are set to cable select.
I've checked the IDE cable and even tried it with only one burner on the cable. [actually tried each burner seperately.]

When I boot, the system acts like it does not even see a boot CD - including, but limited to the original win98se and winxp/pro install CD's even tho the BIOS boot sequence has CD-ROM as the first boot item.

I know that I used to be able to boot from it or how did I load Windows. I had to exchange the burner and have not booted from it since then. Is there a switch or something that I overlooked when I swapped units? Any ideas would be appreciated.

After reading more posts, I checked my IDE cables and they have a notch, so they are correct. The Bios reads Floppy, CD-ROM, HDD.

also:
if i attempt to boot from an Ultimate CD boot, i get "ERROR BOOTING FROM CD/DVD DRIVE. PRESS ANY KEY..... " and on the bottom of the screen I get error msg "......81400319".

If I attempt to boot from my original XP/PRO CD I very briefly get "NTLDR missing" and then the boot continues from the hard drive. I missed the NTLDR msg before and assumed that the CD was being ignored.

Sounds like a failing motherboard. Thats my guess. Look on it for any enlarged capacitors or obvious signs of bad parts.

When you look at the IDE device list in the BIOS, does the CD drive show up as the master on its channel? IF not it might be worth making it the master to see if that helps.

thanks for the answers guys:
electronicsfreak - its kind of crowded in the case, but i took a light and looked at everything that i could find and didn't see any discolored or enlarged parts. The board is about one yr old.

spy - my Lite-On DVD is primary with the Mad Dog combo drive next. secondary has my zip drive and removable rack drive. i put a bootable CD in both DVD players just to see if they were crossed but that is not the case. Mad Dog is allways ignored.

any other ideas?

Sorry- been on vacation...
(1) boot from XP/PRO install CD... I've been reading manuals, and I'm led to believe that when booting from a CD there should be a prompt 'boot from CD?' (or something to that effect) and one should hit any key to continue. It further states that not hitting any key will probably result in a 'NTLDR not found' error, which I get if I use my original XP/pro install disk..but i don't 'see' any boot from CD prompt (Maybe I dont' 'see' it b/c of the speed of the boot? 2.8 MHz, 1/2 memory, Phoenix BIOS?) I doubt it, but suggestions??

(2)Booting from an 'ULTIMATE CD BOOT CD' results in "error booting from CD/DVD drive......... PRESS ANY KEY... error 81400319' any suggestions on that?

(3) all above suggestions have checked out and are not the apparent culpret.
thanks for your advice.

Turn off FAST-BOOT or something like that, so that you can see the memory count, and drive detection. After that, you should see the message to "Press any key to boot from CD" which should stay there for a few seconds. Just press a key to boot off the CD.

I don't like to use cable select (CS) on CD drives just the M/S position, the reason being that I use 40 wire cables for Optical Drives and 80 Wire for Hard Drives. Hard Drives I like to use the CS as all 80 wire cables recognize the CS but not all 40 wire cables will. Just a thought but give it a try.

Ummm... try unplugging the lite-on, since it's the first one being seen, OR, put your boot CD in the lite-on drive.

Turn off FAST-BOOT or something like that, so that you can see the memory count, and drive detection... QUICK POWER ON was disabled..I enabled it to see if there was an efffect-but no changes. no memory count, did see drive detection and IRQ settings.

I don't like to use cable select (CS) on CD... I changed both CD dives to M/S... again, no changes. Pulled one drive out and tried with only one CD. tried with only other CD..no changes.

try unplugging the lite-on, since it's the first one being seen tried it with only the lite-on and no changes..still no 'going to boot from cd msg'

I made the boot sequence: Floopy, CD,HDD inserted blank floppy so that it would halt prior to CD booting logic. when the boot process stopped b/c bad floppy, I removed floppy, hit enter, and then continually hit enter until "cannot boot from cd, NTLDR missing" ... tried without floppy at all and continueally hit enter key during boot process... same=ntldr missing...

how about hyperthreading???
