What is the average speed of a mailbox backup over the LAN to Tape. We are using a HP/Compaq DL380 G4 with 4 GB of RAM with Gigabit connection running Veritas 9.1 to handle our exchange Backup. Our Exchange Server is also a DL 380 G4 with 4 GB of RAM with a Gigabit connection. Our backup job is doing a straight mailbox backup. The total size of the backup is around 120GB and takes about 23 hours to complete. We are backing up around 5.2 GB an hour. This seems extremely slow for a gigabit connection backup. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can have a 100mb connection and it will still be the same speed.

Mailbox backups are slow because BE has to open every single message, bit similar to doing an export of a mailbox.

Are you also doing backups of the Information Stores?

instead of wasting your valuable time doing & troublshooting mailbox backup I sugguest to backup only Infromation Store & Public store backup and then restore them to the temp exchange server and use exmerge utility from MS to extract the requried mailbox to PST format.

mohamdr, what happens if a user deletes a single email? How are you going to restore it quickly after deleted item retention is over?

120GB over 23 hours is under 6GB per hour - it should run better than that. What tape drives have you got?

We are using SDLT 100 GB tapes and can hold 200GB of compressed data.

Or you can buy Mail Box Recovery Software from PowerControls - it can take a veritas exchange infostore backup and break it apart brick by brick for mailbox restores. We are buying it - my mailboxes take forever too- .
