I have an Access 2000 front end to a satellite feed taking data from a Martian Orbiter.

My problem is - how do I calculate the average surface temperature during each orbit? The fields I am using are marsTemp, marsTime, marsOrbitDuration, marsNumberOfReadingsTakenDuringEachOrbit, and marsDayAfterMarchEnd. Any ideas? Karl

Hi Karl,

You really need to work out first of all how you'd calculate the average if you were doing it manually. Are the readings taken at equal time intervals? If so you'll just need the sum of the readings in an orbit divided by the number of readings. If not do you need to take this into account?
Also do you have a field giving a unique ID to each orbit? If not how do you define each orbit?

Sorry if I've been stating the obvious at all, but if you can come back with some calculations then I'm sure someone here will be able to help you get them into a query.

Wouldn't you just want to add up all the values under marsTemp and divide by the number of readings taken in each orbit? Regards,

Yes, but I need to weight it by the final variable. How do I introduce such weighting into my formula? Karl

What does the final variable represent? Could you explain (with a rough formula or detailed description) exactly how it's to be used to weight the formula?

Sharon

I am soooo sorry [peace]

The last varialble marsDayAfterMarchEnd has a value of "April Fools Day". Karl

Nice one!
Sometimes it's so easy to miss the obvious!
There I was thinking that surely someone with access to this kind of info can calculate an average, and is it really possible to measure a surface temperature from orbit anyhow & it was staring me in the face all along!
Question is, did anyone get it?

Sharon

Here I was thinking that you were a student with some kind of project you were asking help on. Seems like you fooled us alright. Regards,

I am happy to hear both of you are such good sports. Until next year, then? Karl
