We are looking to hire a new telco guy for Avaya adminstration. Does anyone know of any sites where I might find an employment test to verify skills and knowledge?

The reason I ask is that the person hiring has no telco experience and keeps bringing in candidates with no extensive Avaya work.

We're not looking for a testing center for certification but rather a list of questions that someone with Avaya administration experience might know. The person doing the interviewing has an excellent network management backround including VOIP but not alot on the TDM side. Quite frequently candidates who have "extensive Avaya experience" on a resume often only have done MACs or long distance billing, not comprehensive switch work. I thought it might help out to provide the person doing the hiring with some standardized questions for Avaya/Telco common in the industry.

I'm not sure of any employment tests, but I'm sure that the members of this forum could come up with some ideas for you, if you're willing to provide additional information.

Do you already have an Avaya PBX, or is this a new installation? Do you already have an Avaya person who could help you out with this process?

What type of Avaya system do you have (or will be getting)? How many physical locations? Do you have a call center? Voicemail? Voice Response Units (IVR's)? Call recording? What type of business are you involved in - there are speciality applications for hotels, etc.

Give us as much information as possible, and we'll try our best to help you out.

Rather than a test, I would advise bringing in an contractor experienced tech to help U interview the candidates. U need a tech that has done everything from wiring, working with vendors, to writing vectors, and have the tech help U to interview. There are many retired techs out there or just grab someone that works in the same city to do a contract interviewing stint with U to help find a good tech for U. I would be available for such a contract, but I know nothing about IP phones though and I am in the Denver area.

P.S. For the best response to a question, read FAQ222-2244. Also give the type & version of your voice mail & pbx & preview your post to make sure it is complete & understandable. Please answer all questions so that I may have the info to assist you. Leaving a post on how you fixed the problem will also be appreciated.

I agree with what orypecos says above. In the event that you can't find a local "expert/contractor" in your vicinity, another option would be to conduct an interactive interview as well. You could always have a potential candidate express various forms of knowledge via network diagram's, design configs, etc...

This could be as easy as a conference call to verify his or her knowledge.
