Avaya ip phones DHCP ACK Error

I keep getting an Ack Error with my Avaya IP phones. I have no VLan's configured for either voice or data. This is simply a testing environment with a server 2008 DHCP server and an IP Office. Some of my IP phones come up using DHCP fine, and thers will continuously loop with the DHCP Ack error. I've gone in a cleared the phones using the Mute - Clear sequence. I'm not sure what needs to be done. I dont know if I need to configure anything on my switch (cisco 3550) or not. Any help is appreciated.
 
Did you create a new option 176 and 242 for the ipphones?

Oh yeah forgot to mention that. I have both options in place.
 
Why do you want to use the server for dhcp?
It should though but just curious :)

That's how it was set up when i took over the position, and that way I can have all my DHCP options in one place for multiple systems.
 
I think you better check the dhcp logs. there must be something wrong.

I experienced that issue when the data switch port that the DHCP server connected to was a member of both the voice and data VLANs. Putting the DHCP server switchport in only the data VLAN fixed the issue for me. Of course, if this is a test environment with only one VLAN then what I mentioned won't make any difference.
 
That is why i always use the IPO as DHCP server in it's own VLAN.
You never have to ask the network guy to help you doing this.
Just ask for a VLAN and tell them the amount of ports you need (and what type)

@tlpeter So how do you deal with the fact that the IPO cannot give VLAN info to the phone? Put it in manually?

I always put a DHCP option 176/242 on the data VLAN to point handsets to the voice VLAN

Yeah me too. But IPO is unable to that. So I'm just curious how tlpeter deals with that problem :)
 
We have just had this issue,
It is when the voice Vlan and the data vlan are routed through to the same dhcp server on a diffenent Vlan, this causes a race condition where the dhcp server acks a request because there are 2 requests reaching the DHCP server from the same device.

Ask the network guy to do this for me.
And if it is not possible then you can only do one thing, staticly assign it.
But I only had to do this once.
Mostly it is done on the proper way.I

are your phones 802.1 setting set to auto ?, i ask because if set to "off" it has caused me issues when using DHCP and i think if you do a mute clear it sets this setting to off.

my 802.1 settings are set to auto. If i statically assign all the parameters on the phone, it comes up working perfectly fine, but this is not an option when trying to test 1000's of phones.
 
Just select the option for the system to act as DHCP server for Avaya IP phones only, it will run quite happily alongside other DHCP servers and will not respond to any other devices, IP Phones will look for a system offering DHCP before reverting to another DHCP server, we have done this on a few sites and it works no problem :)
