Avaya IP phone data usage

I have a customer who would like to know the data usage for a 9608 phone. One of their employees has limited data/month and wants to know if using an IP phone while working from home is a viable option. Any info on data usage while idle vs. while on a phone call would be much appreciated!

LOL - what a question.

depends on the call compression.

8-10K/sec for a G729 call and 80-100K/sec for a G711 call.

It then depends on how long they are on the phone for.
Back ground traffic is minimal.

Justin, is this a GSM modem you are using for connection? (pretty stoneage to have limited data on a DSL, but what do I know..)
GSM is not a reliable connection.

As for the codec HSM mentioned, G.729 consumes 8-10 Kbps, but I you're not hooking your system unprotected to the internet...?

Here is a quick calculation of consumption using following spec:

Codec: G.729a
L2 tech: ADSL
Protocol: H323
VPN: IPSec
Overhead: 5%
= 67 Kbps

...and I find it funny too:)

Call the provider and ask them for realtime traffic report, then make a call for 6 min and ask the provider again. 10x the difference = hour of talking worth of bandwidth. (or google for a reliable traffic meter)

If they have "limited data/month", what is the download/upload speeds? Almost all home internet is asymmetric (much higher download than upload). VoIP will use the same bandwidth in both directions.
 


Check the setup in the modem/router as a few can measure data usage.

What's their data allowance?


 
Unless the phone is off hook the entire time it's plugged in, there should be very minimal data consumption.
