I have a compaq presario laptop with win 98. Am consistantly getting this message:
The AUTOPLAY.EXE file is linked to missing export USER32.DLL:GetMenuState.
also get an error with a red X:
E:\AUTOPLAY.EXE
A device attached to this system is not functioning.

The DVD playeris not working and it does not play any cd's although I can read them through My Computer right click E: and explore.

Any help on these errors would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Paul

Right click My Computer> choose
Properties>Device Manager......."View Devices by Type".......Double Click CD-ROM......Double click the CD-ROM/DVD ROM Drive
(If there's two "different" devices listed beneath the CD-ROM category, do one at a time).....(If two of the "same", then somethings wrong......and we'll follow that line later...
But for now
Choose "Settings".....
Put a check next to "Auto Insert Notification"......
See if that helps.....It should

Thanks TekTippy4u,
I checked the auto insert notification box also there is only one dvd listed in the device manager. In atempting to play a dvd I got an illegal operation message,
Cdvdplayhym
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down
Details:
CDVDPLAYHYM caused an invalid pagefault in module MMCOMNAV.DLL at 0167:02034d4d.
At this point I tried the (explore) autoplay icon that is on the dvd and I got the The
AUTOPLAY.EXE file is linked to missing export USER32.DLL:GetMenuState.
also get an error with a red X:
E:\AUTOPLAY.EXE
A device attached to this system is not functioning.

I can hear the DVD player sarting but when I hit the play arrow I got the illegal operation message.
Thanks for your help so far TekTippy4u,
Paul

Ok; in troubleshooting this, it's wise to try and figure out the meanings of the error messages...

In reference to the CDVDPLAYHYM message, the "HYM" refers to something other than the player......either the Brand of DVD or a File named HYM.....What Brand of DVD is it?...

Also The MMCOMNAV.dll probably means "multi-media communications navigator" (Dynamic Link Library).....I'll look that one up........

Have you recently removed/installed a major multi-media app such as Windows Media Player or Real Player?

Do you have the Original System CD and win98 CD??

What's the software DVD program you're running and do you have that on CD.....?

Hi TekTippy4U,
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you on this hope
you are still interested in helping. Anyway in reply to your last suggestions,
1. The DVD brand I am using not sure but it is The Matrix movie
2. As far as removal or installation of programs as far as the info I have from the owner nothing has been removed and I don't see Media Player or Real Player installed.
3. I only have an emergency recovery CD and win 98 is available but do not have the original
4. The program is Compaq DVD player I do not have the CD but did download the .exe file from Compaq. It is Version 1.10.0030

After reviewing the thread since it's been a while....
It's a shame; I had a nasty experience a while back after I decided to check out the "Internet Special Features" on a DVD...I believe it was the Matrix too...
It had asked me to install it's Internet Dvd player/Browser--Intelli-player--(I think it was called) ,which I naively thought, would "Co-exist" with my already installed "CineMaster"(OEM)....
Needless to say, I did, It mucked , and I went berzerk....

I had ripped the Registry apart myself at that time, trying to get rid of the not realizing the ClassId's and Dll's had been "Overwritten" by said mucky player....

Well, after trying forever to Re-install my OEM player from CD....I couldn't get it to work.....Well, I did a whole Fdisk-Format-Reinstall....

Hopefully you won't be going there....I've learned alot since then (I think.....:>)

I must say it's probably quite important at this point to try and get your hands on "any" Win98 CD....in case you need some Mini-Port drivers and/or the Vmm32 needs to be re-installed...

1)Go into Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs...If you've already installed Compaq.exe(whatever).....un-install through Add/Remove Programs(don't delete the Exe. downloaded)......restart

2)Look for any DVD media player(Especially Intellicrap or whatever and post back all Media players....

If that intelli-crap is there, Remove it through Add/Remove, and restart.....

3)On next boot...Turn Off any Anti-Virus software....
then try Re-installing the Compaq Executable...restart

Whewww!
I don't give up that easy..........

Well I wentthrough the steps,
The only media player I found was in start\programs\accessories\media player, nothing in add\remove programs. There was a divx beta program that I deleted but saved the .exe in case it was needed. Reinstalled the dvd player program and tried to run a movie, Moonstruck, I can hear the player start up and the dvd screen comes on but just stays blank.
Something just ain't happenin'. :(
There was some special thing that came up when I put the Matrix dvd in called PCFriendly Installation.
Also I got the same errors as before when trying to run it.
Also got an error: The C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\_INS0432._MP file appears to be corrupt. Reinstall the file, and then then try again. Let me know if you need any more info.
Thanks for all the help,
Paul

your welcome;
You can safely delete .tmp files, and all files in the C:\Windows\Temp folder (unless you purposefully put them there, as in a download you'll want to install at a later date)..
I have a feeling you have mpeg2 encoding problems...
and/or missing key system files and dll's.
You see, you can save that divx beta exe, but unless it's a .zip or wextract(install shield) file, say such as when you d/l and install Adobe Acrobat Reader....it won't run unless the system .dll's(executables specific to the program) are there...

When you installed the Compaq exe did it create a program files folder?....and you should also now have an entry under Add/Remove Programs for whatever program it installed...If you don't, somethin's odd, i agree....

Go Start>Run type in MSCONFIG hit Enter......click the "system.ini" tab....open [drivers] and [mci] and jot down what's there.....also [system32] area......it maybe quite a long list as there should be something like this under [drivers]; [mci]
wavemapper=*.drv cdaudio=mcicda.drv
MSACM.imaadpcm=*.acm DvDVidEx=MciCinem.drv DVD
MSACM.msadpcm=*.acm MpegVideo=MciCinem.drv DVD
wave=mmsystem.dll DvDVideo=MciCinem.drv DVD
midi=mmsystem.dll MPEGVideo2=mciqtz.drv

Can you play CD's? yet...
Maybe you should update the DirectX drivers from here..
....I'd suggest 8.0 runtime, not 9.0b...I have 8.0.

Even Windows Media Player 6.4 can play DvD's......is the media player there the dinky default Win98 one???

Read this also;
Can you post the links to the exact Compaq download sites as I'd like to check it out for you and see exactly "what" their giving you...

I'm trying.....

Another quick thought.....
Are you using 32bit(true color) on Display Settings???....
It won't work on my Win98 PII 350mHz late '99 machine...and the software help file tells me so also.
If so knock it down to 16bit
