I need to import text from MS Word into Quark. The headings in MS Word use a decimal numbering scheme. Example:
1. = First-Level Heading
1.1= Second-Level Heading
1.1.1= Third-Level Heading
1.1.1.1=Fourth-Level Heading

I need to retain the decimal numbering scheme BUT I will be bringing in sections from MS Word that will not be sequential, so their headings will not be sequential. For example: I may have sections 5, 9 and then 3 coming in from MS WOrd that will need to become sections 1, 2, and 3 in Quark. Is there a way I can tell the heading numbers to "start" numbering from a certain number, and then have an autonumbering feature take over and renumber all the subsequent headings in that section? (Similar to the way you can tell Quark how to sequence page numbering in sections?) I anticipate each section will in essence become a unique chapter and the final product will be an assembled book. Each section (chapter) also needs to have it's own table of contents.

I have never worked with documents this large and need some guidance. Suggestions would be greatly appreaciated.

Does anyone know if maybe there are Xtensions that could handle this heading autonumbering need I have? Since the # pages on these documents can get quite large and since this will be an ongoing production process I need some way to automate this process.

Any other ideas out there would be helpful.

Try copying Word text with autonumbering, open new document and use Paste Special making sure 'Styled Text' is selected. Save this file. Open quark file making sure correct style sheet is selected, Get Text making sure 'Include Style Sheets' is NOT selected.

When putting lists like that together, It's best not to just copy them from Word. The best thing to do is to put the rest of the document together first. Then each heading, subheading, subsubheading, etc, should be given a particular style.

When that's done, go to Edit > Lists... and click "New". Pick the style that's used for main headings, and make sure level is set to one. For subheadings, the level is set to two, etc, up to about 8 levels deep. You may need to format it in a particular way too, with page numbering if required.

To use the list, go to View > Show Lists. Select the list you need (if you've only one, it will be selected already), then click "update". Create a text box, select it, and click "build".

It doesn't add the decimal numbering system, but if they are in the headings anyway, it will pick them up. This is the recommended way of constructing a table of contents or other list, as it can be updated automatically at any time based on the actual document. Clicking "update" and "build" after updates have been made will give you the option to replace the existing list.

You can also create styles for each level, so they appear differently in the contents. For example, a main heading could be bold, while subheadings are indented. See the documentation for more details about what can be achieved.
