automatically tape backup

We are running SQL Server 2000. We use a tape as a backup device. Before backup SQL Server checks a tape and writes a new backup on free space. How can we create backups without this checking?

You may have better luck posting in another forum. The folks who answer most of the questions here are Sybase types.
