I have turned on automatic updates on all of my XP Pro PCs. But I still have to kick off the update process manually by clicking on the gold shield in the system tray.

Am I missing something here? Is there a way to make the "automatic" updates truly automatic with no user intervention required?

if you go into auto updates in your control pannel (btw is this sp2?) there are a few different settings.

Full auto - downloads and installs them at a specified time
Download only -
Notify Only -
Off -

I would suspect you have Download only setup. In that case just change the setting to Full auto mode.

if you want to make this change via a script the key is located at :

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update]
