Had a registry file to force autologon (created to email to friends who are non technical).

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"DefaultUserName"="username"
"AutoAdminLogon"="1"
"ForceAutoLogon"="1"

Strange reaction though as although it works, as soon as you reboot it returns to normal state. Haven't tested this on my pc as I use control userpasswords2 to force the autologon process.

Anybody have any idea why this reg didn't work??

From KB article 324737:

"NOTE: If no DefaultPassword string is specified, Windows automatically changes the value of the AutoAdminLogon key from 1 (true) to 0 (false), disabling the AutoAdminLogon feature."

So you have to add the DefaultPassword value to that same registry key. And of course the user must have a password.

Hope this does the trick.

Test it as a possible answer. Have no problem with empty password when using "control userpasswords2", but this is the correct way of doing things

Also have tweakui. Not for my use, something i could email to a friend and have him just double click. just the thought of talking him through any of the other solutions gives me the shivers, but thanks for the help

creat a text file and enter:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"AutoAdminLogon"="1"

rename it to autologin.reg and doubleclick (or your friend)

If you look at my 1st post you will see this parameter is part of my original reg file. Unfortunately, after the next reboot it returns to the welcome screen. autoadminlogon reutrned to 0 state for some unknown reason.

oops .. it was 4:30 AM when I posted that, jee.. my bad!

However, I had it now working once as well, but I did not have SP1 installed yet, after SP1 it worked. Could it be ...?
