Is it possible to forward mail in exchange to an external e-mail address at all, and if so how?

Any help greatly appreciated.

You can create custom recpients in Exchange. These can contain external email addresses as opposed to entries from the Global Address List. It would then presumably be possible to add this custom recipient as the alternate recipient for a given mailbox.

I've never actually tried this (and I'm not sure if it's what you're really trying to do), but I think it's feasible.

Let me know what you think, it's also possible to do similar things through Outlook Rules.

Hope this helps

David

Do you mean automatically forward?

Ifso,

Create a custom recipient using the SMTP address you want the mail forwarded to (do not hide from address book).

Goto Exchange Recipient, delivery options, alternative recipient, modify: select the recipient from above then select whether to deliver to both you just alternative recipient. OK. You may want to hide the SMTP address profile from the address book so users do not realise they are sending mail to an external source.

Or do you mean how do you configure external mail via an ISP using Internet Mail Service?

Yes, I would like to forward mail sent to an exchange mailbox to an external SMTP address? Is this possible? I tried the above suggestion to forward messages, but they just get sent back.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

The instructions Spirit posted will do the trick. If you've done as he instructed but the mail is being bounced. check the address you defined for the custom recipient - sounds like it's a bad address.

Excellent, it works, that brought the user down to 1 laptop instead of 2.

Thank you.
