How can you disable Auto updates in windows 2000?

We have a machine that needs to connect to a network and the internet but windows updates have caused errors in printing with certain piece of software. It took a while to diagnose the problem before we realised that it was to do with windows update - this software is essential to the office and will cost £6000 to replace.

The problem is, how to disable automatic updates. We have looked in services under administrative tools and can't find it in order to right-click and disable and win 2000 doesn't have the icon in ctrl panel like win xp does.

Any ideas?

Thanking you.....

Which service pack level are you at on your 2K box? SP3 and later included the automatic updates client, which adds the icon to the Windows control panel.

The actual WindowsUpdates are implemented through two background services (use the Services control panel in Computer management):

Automatic Updates - locates appropriate updates based on installed software, service pack and operating system for your PC.

Background Intelligent Transfer Service - Downloads updates that you tick, yielding to other downloads so it only uses idle bandwidth.

It's up to service pack 2 as we needed to do this in order to get the blaster patch on it - it is the updates after this that interferes with the software which is why we want to disable auto updates - we couldn't find the automatic update service in computer management/services and this is why we're a little foxed.....

You won't have the icon (or services) until you install SP3 or SP4, or you manually install the update client separately.

So does that mean that it won't look for auto updates with sp3 or 4? That would solve the problem although it's silly to have to leave it but this software is essential to thier business.

In Win2000 pre SP3, there is no such thing as Automatic updates. You can manually visit the WindowsUpdate site and have it scan the machine, but the automatic updates functionality was introduced in SP3.

Good well that solves the prob then, though i'm not sure it's wise to have the machine have no updates, it's essentially a matter of priority and this software is thier's - thanks for the help mate!
