I'm having a weird problem accessing my Access DBs on my home computer. It's happened on more that one DB. But never used to happen at all.

I go to open a DB, and a popup window comes up asking for some kind of authentication like username or password or something like that. The first field was already filled in, but the second field (password) was blank.

I apologize for not having the exact wording on the popup window, but I'm not in near that computer at this time.

None, of the DBs have passwords on them.
And if I download them on my work computer, the open just groovy.

What's causing this and how can I stop this from happening? It's preventing me from opening these DBs on my home computer!

Perhaps a system.mdw issue ?

Hope This Helps, PH.

PHV is probably correct. It sounds like you set permissions on your database. How to fix it? Hard to tell you what to do without seeing what you did or changed. I would simply try replacing the System.mdw from a system running the same version of Access with no permissions set on it. It is always a good idea to tuck one of these away somewhere if you are going to mess with permissions and screw them up. You can always copy your original back if needed. I have Access 2000 and will send you the system.mdw if you have my version?

thanks. I sure don't remember screwing around with it, but know telling where I've poked around on my laptop.
I'll check and see what version I have.
Should I search for 'system.mdw'

Yes, copy it and replace it on the troubled machine. You can rename it on the troubled system before replacing it just in case.

Should I search for 'system.mdw' ???

I tried searching my work machine for 'system.mdw' and didn't find anything and I have Access installed.

Is it in a particular directory? Or go by a different name?

System.mdw is the name. It probably is in C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\ make sure in your folder options in My Computer you have it set to show ALL files.

I checked at home on the laptop that's screwed up, I'm running Access 2000. So I would very much appreciate you sending me a 'clean' System.mdw file. lovewindoze@yahoo.com

At work I have Access 2002 and for the life of me can't find the System.mdw on the machine. I've checked the Folder Options View to make sure I'm viewing hidden and system files/folders.

But they have our cpu's setup kinda oddly here, where my My Documents folder maps to a networked drive so I can login from any machine on the network to access my files. So maybe that has something to do with it.?
Curious... is it possible to rename this file? Or is it always called System.mdw?

I'm assuming when I get back home to my laptop, I'll be able to find the System.mdw file.

thanks for all your help.
I will definitely make a backup of this file next time I install Access anywhere. Anything else I should backup right away?

What they may have done as we do is create a custom MDW then assign privileges as required. You can search your system for *.mdw to locate the file.
