We have a remote server connected via a vpn tunnel. W2K AD network. These remote servers are used for a failover back up system. Problem is when users login at our local site, some are being authenicated on the remote server across the wan. Is there a way to force the authenication to take place at the local site? The remote servers are on a VPN on the same subnet. However, I do not want to to limit them from not being able to use the remote server if needed if a local DC goes down. Any thoughts? Thanks

In a domain, under 1 site, authentication occurs at the 1st available DC across the WAN.

What is the structure of your domain? How many DC's, DNS and remote servers.

As a suggestion, create 2 sites in your domain. All users and computers in the "main site or default first site" and create a second site for your remote servers (on a seperate subnet). In doing that, users would authenticate with the DC's in their site. If a DC is unavailable then the Remote servers will be accessed, since the RS would be the first availabe DC.

Create sites under sites and services.
