Hello we are looking at upgrading to the new Aura platform from CM3.1.4 I was hoping to get some feedback on the pro’s and con’s you may have experienced with the new architecture and the new features.

Thanks in advance for your feedback

Depends on what you mean by the upgrade. Aura is a suite of products. If you mean you are upgrading to Avaya Aura Communication Manager 6.1 you might want to go out to the Avaya support site and find the history of releases document showing the various feature enhancements (there are many).

If you are talking about upgrading CM and adding Session Manager then you are talking a completely different animal. Depending on the size of your enterprise and what you currently have in place you may want to look at the new Midsize Enterprise Solution (MES) which combines several products onto one server (CM, CMM, AES, Presence, etc..). It may prove cost effective since you have to change server platforms anyway. If you are looking at high availability stay with the duplicated CM servers. You get what you pay for.

If you are looking at Session Manager the first question to ask is why? What are the benefits you are looking for. SIP Endpoints? Video Conferencing? SIP trunking? Presence? Each of these can be a valid reason to add Session Manager. Conferencing alone can fund the entire project if you are currently spending a significant amount with an outsourcer. Don't forget however there are still analog requirements such as modems and FAX machines as well as other TDM based requirements which may require you to retain or replace gateways.

You need to start by performing an internal assessment and asking what is it we are trying to bring to the enterprise. Video Conferencing is great but probably won't have any ROI if everyone is in the same building.
