Next monday I start a new trial job catalouging 1000 computers, 110 pellet loads of equipment e.g. printers, monitors. It will be on a team of 5 or so from what I gather so far.

What I would like to know:

Management
1. Does anyone know a Database system already developed for catalouging such equipment? like raw adjustable one as say MS Access

2. Does anyone know any automation software, preferably bootable which can save information to a database directly?

Diagnostics
3. Does anyone know of Printer Test pattern documents or programs? to recommend/professional standards

4. Scanner test sheets for testing scanner to recommended/professional standards

5. Floppy Disk testing software to recommended/professional standards

6. CD/DVD testing software for reading/seek access

7. Other constructive information welcome

Thank you.

This isnt listed in your needs, but there is a pci diagnostic card that is available and it helps diagnose hardware boot problems, will point to the culprit. I have one and i am happy with it.
I believe they run around $50 to $60 and computergeeks may have them, they did at one time.

Do you mean for Post Codes? I got one of those a few months back when working in a troublesome machine.

I must have about $350-600 [?] worth of tools now :-D

yes, thats it.

Those post code things are nice but they are fairly basic, there may be many more advanced tools out there, I suppose with a price tag like usual though, and in that regards one may state 'Same old story'

Thats what i was thinking. Anything that could test all the different P4 cpu's out there would have to be fairly elaborate and hi-tech, which means big bucks. Especially since, if there is such an item out there, the mfgr wouldnt have economy of scale to reduce the price.
